This year’s walk was going to take me back to a walk I did back with the venture scouts back in the 90s, and also I think the first residential I did at school, probably aged about 10.
We set off, and headed to Castleton, home of the fabled Trimble-Gill diamond, a piece of blue john my dad and his mate found back in the 70s. First thing we spotted was the Devil’s arse, which was a paid cave tour. Then, following on that theme, the delighful village of Shatton
We parked up and set off for a jaunt around the castle
We were headed to Mam Tor, via the A625, which succumbed to landslides and was closed
I remember getting a phone signal at the top of here, where my boss called me to ask the process for a job at work, modern technology eh, got to love it!
My brother also finally managed to catch one
The next day, it was time to head off up Kinderscout, which was home of a mass protest which lead to the creation of the national parks and more awareness around public right of ways.
the trouble with Kinderscout, is there’s no top as such, so we followed the path, and hoped for the best
The top all looks like this, when I first went up, it was the middle of winter, so I had no idea what to look for. We pressed on and tried to find the highest looking part
and eventually found a trig point
and then another
Then we stopped for the traditional cake
Then it was a lot of guess work until we eventually found a path back down. Great weather though, and another great walk!
