This year marked a slight change to the line up with the addition of Dylan, my son coming along for the first time and where better than his home country county of Wales. We’d booked an AirBnB in Brecon. Dylan had been up with in Yorkshire so we all headed down. It was another lovely day and quite a warm drive down but nice to take the more scenic route down through Wales.

I had been to Brecon before, a couple of times when I used to live down there but never had the time to properly walk around. The AirBnB was a lovely house, just out of the centre. We arrived, got settled in and headed out for a stroll around walking out on the river bank and back on the canal towpath.

The next morning, we set off to Pen Y Fan. Starting from the old pub off the main road. We felt it appropriate to be leading the one native in our group up to the summit of one of South Wales’ most prominent peaks. Despite only living a few miles away. Dylan has never climbed it

Ever dressed for the conditions, a new marketing campaign for the Burger Jester is surely immienent

The path up was a well trodden one and took us up via a few steps to the top. We saw a lot of wildlife on the way up, including some large kites

Not one of my fittest periods, I remember looking up the trail to see my 63 year old dad marching off into the distance and thinking it was a bit embarrassing I was puffing and panting so far behind. The fact my 16 year old son was even further behind me ‘admiring the view’ more often than me made me feel a little better!

We finally reached the top and had to fly the flag naturally

We walked to a couple of the other peaks whilst up there (as it would be rude not to)

Then it was a quick walk back down the way we came and back to Brecon for the traditional curry and beer.

The next day we dropped Dylan back off at home and headed back to Yorkshire.
